Along These Lines

sonic research, heritage soundwalk

Collaborative sonic research, archival exploration and immersive-experience devising, for sonic heritage experience ‘Along These Lines’ – working as part of a team with artist Anna Edmonds and Quiet Down There.

‘Along These Lines’ is an immersive soundwalk that explores Brighton’s laundry heritage. Laundry is a distinctly aural and sensory experience – we often hear people talk of the sounds, smells and feels that come with a trip to the laundrette, and many local people remember someone in their family working in laundry services.

Listeners visit a selection of locations in and around The Level, Roundhill and Elm Grove areas, to hear stories of local laundry history and how important these working women were to Brighton.

Listen To An Extract:

‘Everyday Washing’:

Hear an artistic piece exploring a selection of laundry diary extracts found in the Mass Observation Archive at The Keep, enlivened by Anna, Helen and Survat and Emily. Diary extracts collected and assembled for this piece by Helen Dewhurst.
